The swimming competition at the World Champs is closing in quickly and the training is getting more intense. I’m really enjoying being a part of the team and catching up with all of my mates again.
I have a full program for the Championships, kicking off on the first day with the 400m free on March 25th. I’ve only got 1 day off from racing during the Champs, finishing with the 1500m on April 1st. So I guess you can say I’m spending a fair amount of time in the pool.
My aim is to start well and build momentum as I go through. Obviously you want to win everything, so it’s important to get a good start and build your confidence.
I’ve been competing for 10 years now and I’m used to swimming a full program. Sometimes I think it would be nice to enjoy the meet from a spectator point of view and support my teammates, but as I swim across the majority of days, it’s hard to do.
The only way I actually could be a spectator is to drop the 1500m free at the end of the meet, which probably won’t happen!
It’s important to relax and enjoy your down time during an important meet and as a team we spend a lot of time watching movies. I recently went to the see “The Illusionist”, which I thought was a good film.
All the guys went to play Putt Putt during the week. I’m not that good at the game so I tried to laugh it off and not let my ego get too damaged!
It’s been great to receive some of your comments. In reference to one of your questions about injuries, I would say that it is very important that you take the advice of your physiotherapist or doctor. In my case Dr. Gregory Hoy performed my shoulder surgery, and I found him to be a remarkable and friendly surgeon.
Bring on the World Champs, Grant.

It’s been an interesting week to say the least not only have Candice and I continued moving all our stuff in to the new apartment but I’ve had a crazy week with plenty of media build up to the World Champs and then I’ve been trying to keep my focus on training.
I feel like I have [...]
